Greeting of the International Shogi Festival 2021
Japan Shogi Association
Chairman
Yasumitsu Sato
To hold “the International Shogi Festival 2021”, I would like to make my greeting. “The International Shogi Festival 2021” aims at the international popularization and promotion of Shogi, cultural exchange and international friendship through Shogi. This event was first held in 1999 as “the International Shogi Forum” and has been held every three years. In 2020, the event was scheduled to be held on a larger scale renaming as “the International Shogi Festival”. but It has been postponed due to the spread of COVID-19. This year’s event will be held online because it is still difficult for domestic and international players of Shogi to participate in the event due to COVID-19.
“The International Shogi Tournament” has been held as the main program with players representing dozens of countries and regions around the world. This year’s tournament will be held using the online Shogi game system, 81 Dojo. In addition, there will be a variety of programs, for example, coaching games for foreigners by professionals, special games by top professionals such as Akira Watanabe Meijin and Yoshiharu Habu 9-dan, and YouTube broadcast of a memorial game between the winner of the International Shogi Tournament and Sota Fujii Oui, Kisei. I hope that this event will convey to people all over the world the appeal of Shogi, a Japanese traditional culture and a world-class difficult game.
In addition, through the new way by online, I hope that not only Shogi fans but also that people all over the world who are interested in Japan through the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and Paralympics learn about Shogi.
Lastly, I would like to express my gratitude to the Agency for Cultural Affairs and other related parties for our sponsors and supports in this event. I conclude my greetings by wishing for the earliest possible end of infections of COVID-19 and the success of all participants.
